Window tint medical exemptions in South Dakota

South Dakota does not provide one. Checked Chapter 32-15 of the Codified Laws, where South Dakota's window rules live, section by section. The tint provision is 32-15-5, titled nontransparent material on windows prohibited, petty offence, official certificates excepted; 32-15-2.5 separately makes one-way glass or film in the rear window a misdemeanour. Read the 32-15-5 title carefully, because it is the trap here: the excepted official certificates are the stickers a state puts on the glass, not a doctor's certificate, and nothing in the chapter provides a medical exemption. Note the limit of this check: we read the chapter's section titles and the neighbouring provisions rather than the full text of 32-15-5, so if you have a medical need, ask the Department of Public Safety before assuming there is no route at all.

What applies instead

With no exemption in the statute, the ordinary limits stand: front side windows 35% VLT minimum, back side windows 20% VLT minimum, rear window 20% VLT minimum. A physician's letter does not change them, because there is no provision for an officer to apply.

The practical route for a sun-sensitivity condition is a clear or near-clear ceramic film. The good ones block 99% or more of UV and much of the infrared heat while metering well inside the legal VLT, so you get the protection without the darkness South Dakota forbids.

Frequently asked questions

Does South Dakota have a window tint medical exemption?

No. Can a doctor's note make darker tint legal in South Dakota?

Not on its own. With no exemption in the statute, a physician's letter gives an officer no provision to apply, so the ordinary limits stand: front side windows 35% VLT, back sides 20% VLT, rear 20% VLT.

What can I do about sun sensitivity in South Dakota then?

A clear or near-clear ceramic film is the usual route: the good ones block 99% or more of UV and a large share of infrared heat at a VLT that stays inside S.D. Codified Laws §§ 32-15-2.4, 32-15-2.5. That gets you the protection without the darkness the statute forbids.
