Hood Wrap Cost in 2026: Carbon, Matte and Gloss Black Compared
A professionally installed hood wrap costs $300 to $600 in gloss or matte black on a typical sedan in 2026, and $400 to $800 in carbon fiber or other textured film. Large truck and SUV hoods run toward the top of each range, and custom printed hood graphics run $350 to $700 before design work.
The hood is one of the easiest panels to wrap, but it is also the hardest place for vinyl to live: it is horizontal, it faces the sun, and it sits over a hot engine. Here is what each finish costs, how heat affects the film, and how long a hood wrap realistically lasts.
Hood wrap prices by finish
Finish moves the price more on a hood than on most panels because the hood is large, flat and fully visible, so installers use more of the expensive film and have less room to hide seams. Gloss black is the cheapest and most common. Satin and matte cost the same or slightly more. Carbon fiber, brushed metal and chrome cost the most because the film is pricier and thicker textured films are harder to stretch over a hood's front edge without distorting the weave.
A Gilroy, California shop lists hood wraps at $400 to $800 installed, with $150 to $300 of that in vinyl, and lists gloss black as its most requested finish. Forum quotes for a partial hood, just the raised center section, start below $200 at some shops and run past $500 at others for the same 3M film, which is why getting two quotes pays off.
| Finish | Installed price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Gloss black | $300 to $500 | Most common, hides wear best |
| Satin or matte black | $300 to $600 | Cuts glare, shows fading sooner |
| Carbon fiber texture | $400 to $800 | Thicker film, shorter horizontal rating |
| Custom printed graphic | $350 to $700 plus design | Printed film plus laminate |
| Partial hood (center section only) | $175 to $525 | Wide spread between shops |
SUV hoods run about 1.2 times sedan pricing and full-size truck hoods about 1.4 times.
Does engine heat hurt a hood wrap
Not on a normal road car. Avery Dennison lists a service temperature range of -50 to 180°F for SW900, and 3M lists -65 to 225°F for 2080, noting that the film is not meant to sit at the extremes for long periods. A painted hood over a running engine on a hot day stays inside those ranges on most cars, and the bigger heat load usually comes from sun on the top surface, not from the engine underneath.
Where heat does cause trouble is on cars with hood vents, turbo cars with poor insulation, or track cars that run hard for long sessions. Edges around vents can lift, and dark film in strong sun can soften enough to show chips or let dirt embed. Keep the factory hood insulation pad in place, and do not wrap over vents that blow hot air directly across the film.
- ◆Sun on the top surface is the main heat source, not the engine
- ◆Vented and track-driven hoods are the real risk cases
- ◆Dark film gets hotter than light film in direct sun
How long a hood wrap lasts
Hoods are horizontal panels, and film makers rate them far below vertical panels. Avery Dennison gives SW900 black and white 12 years vertical but 3 years horizontal in its mildest climate zone, standard colors 2 years horizontal, and SW900X textured films, which include carbon fiber, 4 years vertical and only 1 year horizontal. 3M's bulletin gives 2080 an 8-year expected life on vertical panels and no published horizontal figure; shops generally plan on about 3 years on hoods and roofs.
Those are warranty floors in mild climates, not expiry dates, and garaged cars often double them. Still, a carbon fiber hood will usually show fading or loss of texture contrast before a gloss black one, and both will age faster than the doors. Plan on 3 to 5 years for gloss black and 2 to 4 years for carbon fiber on a car parked outside.
Hood wrap vs PPF on the hood
A hood wrap changes color. It does not stop rock chips well: wrap vinyl is roughly 3 to 4.5 mil thick, and a stone at highway speed can still chip paint through it or tear the film. If the goal is protection, clear paint protection film on the hood is the purpose-built product, and full-front PPF runs $1,800 to $3,000. Some owners do both, with a black or carbon wrap on the hood and clear PPF on the bumper.
There are also black and satin paint protection films that change the look and protect at the same time. They cost more than vinyl but are thicker, self-heal light scratches, and carry longer warranties. The full comparison is in PPF vs Vinyl Wrap: Protection, Looks, Cost and Resale.
Booking a hood wrap
Ask the shop which film it uses, whether it wraps the hood in place or removes it, and how it handles the front edge, which is where hood wraps lift first. Wrapping the edge around to the underside is more work but lasts longer than trimming at the top. Ask whether the price includes the cowl area and washer jets.

Frequently asked questions
Will a hood wrap peel from engine heat?
Rarely on a normal car. Film makers rate wrap vinyl well above typical hood surface temperatures; lifting usually starts at the front edge or around vents, not from engine heat across the panel.
Is a carbon fiber hood wrap worth it?
It is the cheapest way to get the look, at $400 to $800 versus about $1,300 list for a real carbon replacement hood (Seibon, Lexus IS example) before paint and fitting. Expect a shorter life than gloss black on the hood.
Can I wrap a hood with rock chips?
Yes, but the film will show the chips as small dents. Touch up deep chips first, since film over open chips can also trap moisture.
How long before I can wash a new hood wrap?
Most installers ask you to wait about 48 hours before getting it wet and to hand wash rather than use a brush car wash.
