Find your region below, then your state, for the four limits and the statute. If you're comparing states (moving, buying out of state, or planning a road trip), the regional grouping makes it easier to scan neighboring states at once. The interactive version with per-state detail pages is at /tools/window-tint-laws.

1.How VLT works

VLT, visible light transmission, is the percentage of light that passes through a window, counting the factory glass and any film together, not the film alone. A factory windshield already runs around 70-80% VLT before any film is added, which is why a 35% tint on a side window is noticeably darker than the same number sounds on paper.

Every state sets its own minimum VLT for front side windows, back side windows and the rear window, plus separate rules for how far down a windshield strip can run and how reflective (mirrored) a film is allowed to be. A film legal in one state can be illegal thirty miles away across a state line.

Enforcement discretion and local amendments vary by jurisdiction and over time; the statute citation in each row is the place to verify current language, not this document.

⚠What this document does not cover

  • City or county ordinances that go beyond the state statute.
  • Non-automotive glass (homes, commercial buildings, boats).
  • How individual officers or inspection stations exercise enforcement discretion.
  • Legal advice for a citation or a specific vehicle; consult the cited statute or an attorney.
  • Amendments passed after each row's verified date; statute citations are the authoritative source going forward.

Frequently asked questions

Does VLT measure the film by itself or the film plus the glass?

The glass and film together. A film rated 35% VLT on its own packaging will read differently once installed, because factory glass already blocks some light before the film is added.

Can SUVs and trucks use darker tint than sedans?

In some states, yes. A number of states allow any darkness on back side and rear windows for multi-purpose vehicles (SUVs, vans, trucks) once the front side windows meet the state's sedan limit. Check the notes for your specific state in the interactive tool at /tools/window-tint-laws.

What happens if I move to a state with stricter tint laws?

Most states apply their own law to any vehicle registered or driven there, regardless of where the tint was installed. If you move or frequently drive into a stricter state, check that state's limits before the stricter rule becomes a ticket.
