How to use this document

Work through the sections in order before your first consultation, then print the checklist section at the bottom and fill it in during the visit or the call.

1.Manufacturer certifications

Most PPF and ceramic coating warranties (see the warranty table in the paint protection buyer's guide) require installation by an installer the manufacturer has specifically authorized. An uncertified install can still look fine on day one, but it can also void the manufacturer's warranty entirely, which only becomes a problem when the film lifts or the coating fails and there is no one to call.

The table below is a live read of the certifications listed studios actually hold in the Coateau directory, most common first, not a fixed or editorial list.

2.Public review volume

Coateau's directory currently lists 170 studios across 38 cities, carrying their public Google rating and review count rather than a Coateau-generated score. A studio with a four-digit review count and a rating that has held steady over years of jobs is a different signal than one with a handful of five-star reviews from the last month.

Review volume is not proof of skill on its own, but a near-total absence of public reviews for an otherwise established-looking business is worth asking about directly.

3.Warranty registration

Several film warranties in the comparer require the installer to register the install with the manufacturer, and a few (see Ultimate Fusion and similar tiered warranties) require the owner to keep up an annual inspection to keep coverage valid. Ask whether registration happens automatically at install or whether you need to do it yourself, and get the registration confirmation in writing or by email before you leave.

4.What a written quote should contain

  • The exact service and coverage tier, by name, not just the service category.
  • The film or coating brand and line, matching a row in the manufacturer warranty table.
  • A price range tied to your vehicle's size class, not a single flat number with no basis stated.
  • The deposit amount and what it covers if you reschedule or cancel.
  • An estimated turnaround time and what happens if the job runs long.
  • Who performs the physical installation.

5.Printable checklist

Print this section (use your browser's print dialog; the page strips navigation and buttons automatically) and bring it to a consultation or walk-around.

  • [ ] Studio can name the specific film or coating brand and line, not just the category (ceramic, PPF).
  • [ ] That brand's manufacturer certification is current (ask to see it, not just hear it).
  • [ ] Public review count and rating checked independently (Google, not just the studio's own site).
  • [ ] Warranty registration process confirmed: automatic, or does the owner register it.
  • [ ] Written quote names coverage tier, vehicle size, price range and deposit amount.
  • [ ] Turnaround time and reschedule/cancellation policy stated in writing.
  • [ ] Asked who performs the physical install.

⚠What this document does not cover

  • Coateau lists studios from their own public profiles, public review platforms and self-reported certifications. Coateau does not physically inspect studios, verify certifications on site, or guarantee workmanship.
  • A ranked or starred recommendation of any specific studio.
  • Pricing negotiation tactics.
  • Legal recourse if a job goes wrong; that is between the customer and the studio, and the contract they sign.

Frequently asked questions

Does Coateau verify or inspect the studios it lists?

No. Coateau lists studios using public information such as their Google Business profile, public review counts, and self-reported certifications and services. Coateau does not send anyone to inspect a shop or confirm a certification in person.

What if a studio claims a certification it doesn't actually hold?

Ask to see the certification directly, and cross-check the brand's own installer locator if one is public. A studio unwilling to show proof of a certification it claims is a reasonable reason to keep looking.

Is a higher review count always better?

Not by itself. A high review count with a rating that has stayed consistent over time is a stronger signal than a short burst of recent five-star reviews, which can reflect a promotion rather than consistent quality.
