Windshield Protection Film: ClearPlex, XPEL, Cost, Optics and Legality
Windshield protection film is a clear, thin film applied to the outside of the windshield to take rock chips, pitting and small impacts so the glass does not, and it typically costs about $450 to $850 installed in 2026 depending on the product and windshield size. The best-known products are Madico's ClearPlex and XPEL's Windshield Protection Film, launched in 2024. It is different from windshield tint: it goes on the outside, it is designed to be nearly clear, and it is meant to be replaced as it wears.
Whether it pays off depends on how often you lose windshields and what yours costs to replace. On cars with cameras and sensors behind the glass, a replacement can involve recalibration, which is the main argument for the film. Below is how the products compare, what they do to the view, how long they last and the legal questions to ask first.
What windshield protection film is
Unlike paint protection film, which is a thick, stretchy urethane, windshield films are usually thin and hard. ClearPlex is a 4 mil PET (polyester) film with a scratch-resistant surface coating, which Madico says stands up to wiper wear better than TPU films and helps rain and snow run off. It goes on the outside of the glass, where it absorbs the energy of small stones and grit that would otherwise chip or pit the windshield, and it can hold the glass together better in a break-in or accident.
The film is sacrificial. As it collects pits and wiper wear, it is peeled off and replaced, leaving the glass underneath intact. Madico says it should be removed and replaced occasionally, with timing depending on miles driven and conditions, and it does not publish a fixed interval.
Think of it as a replaceable skin for the glass, not a permanent coating.
The products and what they cost
Prices are set by shops rather than manufacturers, and the products are not sold everywhere. The figures below come from one California installer's published pricing; expect regional variation and higher prices for very large or steeply curved windshields. These are separate from the $300 to $500 that a ceramic windshield tint usually costs, which is a different, interior-mounted heat film covered in Windshield Tint Guide: Clear Ceramic, Visor Strips and What Is Legal.
- ◆3M does not appear to sell a dedicated exterior windshield protection film in the US; confirm with any shop that offers one
- ◆Ask what the warranty covers in writing, since terms vary by product and change over time
- ◆Ask what replacing the film will cost when it wears, not just the first install
| Product | What the maker says | Example installed price |
|---|---|---|
| Madico ClearPlex | 4 mil PET, 88 to 89% VLT, over 99% UV rejection, replaceable | $650 standard; $850 oversize (Gilroy Blackout) |
| ExoShield | Windshield protection film sold through installers | $450 standard (Gilroy Blackout) |
| XPEL Windshield Protection Film | Clear exterior film, excellent optical clarity, does not affect sensors, dealer installed | Not published; ask an XPEL dealer |
Optics: what it does to your view
A clear film still changes the glass slightly. Madico lists ClearPlex at 88 to 89 percent visible light transmission, meaning the film alone passes about 11 to 12 percent less light, plus about 9 to 10 percent visible reflection. On a clean, new film most drivers do not notice it in daylight. Wear is the bigger factor: as the surface picks up pits and wiper marks, it can haze, especially at night and in low sun, and that is the signal to replace it.
Sensors and cameras are the other question. XPEL says its film does not affect how windshield sensors perform. Madico markets ClearPlex as a way to avoid costly ADAS repairs and recalibration, and Gilroy Blackout notes that each vehicle's camera and sensor setup should be assessed rather than assumed compatible. If your car has a head-up display, rain sensor or forward camera, ask the installer about your specific model.
Is windshield protection film legal?
The firm rule is federal: FMVSS 205 requires a new windshield to transmit at least 70 percent of visible light, and nearly every state carries the same 70 percent floor for the windshield in its own tint statute. A film that passes 88 to 89 percent on its own lowers the total, so the glass and film together have to stay above that floor; a reputable installer can meter it.
State law is less clear. Most state tint statutes prohibit aftermarket film below the AS-1 line, and TintLaws notes that even near-clear 90 percent films are treated as aftermarket tint below the line in most states, with Oklahoma one of the few to allow certified clear windshield film. Those statutes were written for interior tint, and how they apply to exterior protection film is not settled in many states. Ask the installer how the product is handled where you live, and check Windshield Tint Guide: Clear Ceramic, Visor Strips and What Is Legal for the state rules on windshield film generally.
Is it worth it?
The math works best for drivers who lose windshields regularly: long highway commutes, gravel roads, construction zones, or states where trucks throw stones, though Madico's ClearPlex warranty excludes damage from driving on gravel or unpaved roads, so check your film's warranty terms first. If a camera-equipped windshield costs about $1,500 to replace, as Madico estimates, a $450 to $850 film that saves one replacement pays for itself, even after a later film replacement. It also helps on cars where an exact-match windshield is hard to find.
It makes less sense if your insurance covers glass with no deductible, if you rarely see chips, or if you mainly drive in town. Whatever you decide, the windshield is the one panel paint protection film packages do not cover, so it is worth raising when you quote front-end PPF; How Much Does PPF Cost in 2026? Prices by Coverage covers those packages, and the instant quote on Coateau lists local studios and the brands they are certified to install.
Frequently asked questions
How much does windshield protection film cost?
One California shop charges $650 for ClearPlex on a standard windshield, $850 for oversize glass and $450 for ExoShield. Prices elsewhere typically fall in a similar range but vary by region and windshield size.
How long does windshield protection film last?
There is no fixed interval. Madico says replacement timing depends on miles driven and conditions; replace it when it becomes pitted or hazy enough to affect your view.
Does XPEL make a windshield film?
Yes. XPEL unveiled its Windshield Protection Film in February 2024, a clear exterior film installed by XPEL dealers that XPEL says does not affect windshield sensors.
Will windshield film stop a crack?
It is designed to stop small chips and pitting from stones and grit. A large impact can still break the glass, and film warranties do not promise to replace a broken windshield.
