PPF Warranty Explained: What XPEL, 3M, SunTek and STEK Actually Cover

Published October 24, 2026 · By the Coateau editorial team

A PPF warranty from XPEL, 3M, SunTek or STEK covers manufacturing defects in the film, mainly yellowing, cracking, bubbling or blistering and delamination, for 10 to 12 years from installation. It does not cover rock chip impacts, scratches, stains, water spots or damage from car washes and chemicals, and it says nothing about installation mistakes, which fall under the installer's own workmanship warranty.

The headline years are close across brands. The fine print is not: who pays for labor, whether you have to register, whether a new owner inherits the coverage, and which coatings and care products you are allowed to use. Those details decide whether a claim in year seven gets paid.

Manufacturer warranty vs installer warranty

Two different promises come with a PPF install. The manufacturer warranty covers the film as a material: it should not yellow, crack, bubble or separate from the paint because of how it was made. It only applies to film installed by an authorized professional, and claims usually go through the shop that did the work. 3M, for example, sends owners to the original installer first and, if that shop is gone, to an installer 3M selects.

The installer warranty covers the job. Lifted edges from poor wrapping or prep, dirt or hair trapped under the film, stretch marks, visible relief cuts and knife marks in the paint are workmanship problems, not film defects. Shops set these terms themselves, from one year to as long as you own the car, so get them in writing. Edge lifting in particular is usually an installer issue; PPF Edges Peeling or Lifting: Causes, Fixes and Warranty Rules covers how to tell which it is.

What each brand covers, side by side

The table summarizes each brand's published warranty terms as of October 2026. Terms can vary by product and region, so ask the installer for the warranty card for the exact film going on your car.

STEK's longer term comes with the most conditions. XPEL's shorter term includes labor, which is often the larger cost.

Yellowing, cracking and delamination: when they count

Yellowing is the defect everyone asks about, and the brands treat it differently. XPEL, 3M and SunTek list it as a covered defect. STEK covers yellowing only when it is caused solely by a material or manufacturing defect and excludes environmental yellowing entirely. Stains from bugs, sap or bird droppings that look like yellowing are excluded by every brand. Modern film rarely yellows on its own; the reasons and how installers test for real yellowing are covered at Does PPF Yellow? Why Old Film Did and Modern Film Doesn't.

Cracking and bubbling are clearer. Film that crazes or splits, or that blisters away from the paint without an impact or chemical cause, is a straightforward claim. Delamination, where the film separates from the paint across a panel rather than just at an edge, is also covered by XPEL and STEK, while edge lift on its own is usually judged as an installation or wear issue.

Self-healing performance is not a warranty item. If the top coat heals slower after several years, that is normal aging rather than a defect; see PPF Self-Healing Explained: What Heals, What Doesn't, and How.

Common exclusions that void or deny claims

Exclusions are where most denied claims come from. The lists overlap heavily across brands.

  • ◆Rock chips and road debris: 3M excludes dents from rocks and road debris, and XPEL excludes rock and road debris impact. The film did its job; the impact is not a defect.
  • ◆Stains, scratches and water spots: XPEL and STEK exclude stains and mineral water spots.
  • ◆Wash damage: XPEL and STEK exclude automatic car washes and improper wash tools or techniques.
  • ◆Other brands' coatings: XPEL excludes use of non-XPEL ceramic coatings, and STEK excludes third-party coatings. Check before coating over the film; Can You Ceramic Coat Over PPF? Yes, and Here Is the Right Order covers the options.
  • ◆Removal and repaint: 3M excludes paint pull during removal, and STEK excludes repainted or weakened paint.
  • ◆Restricted areas: 3M's warranty does not apply to headlights, and STEK excludes film on legally restricted parts such as headlamps and taillights.
  • ◆Collisions, hail, vandalism, fire, chemical abuse and panels not re-filmed after body repair

Registration, care rules and making a claim

Registration matters most with 3M and STEK. 3M asks owners to register online at 3M.com/ppfwarranty to validate coverage and shares the VIN and install date, not personal details, with Carfax. STEK requires registration through STEK ONE within 30 days and a click on the activation link in the confirmation email; until then the warranty is not active. STEK also requires its PPF Care Solution, an annual paid inspection at a STEK installer with proof kept, and defect reports within 15 days of discovery.

Transfer can add resale value, but only with paperwork. XPEL's clear films transfer for the remaining term if the new owner submits proof of the original installation date. STEK transfers if the new owner registers and notifies the installer or STEK within 30 days of the sale. 3M's US warranty card says its coverage is only for the original purchaser.

To claim, photograph the problem, then contact the installing shop with the invoice and warranty card. Expect the film to be inspected before anything is approved. Remedies differ: XPEL replaces film including labor, while STEK covers the film only and caps total claims at the product's purchase price, so labor for a full front re-install could be on you. Frequently asked questions

Does a PPF warranty cover rock chips?

No. Rock and road debris impacts are excluded by every major brand, since absorbing them is the film's job. A damaged section is replaced at your cost.

Is a PPF warranty transferable when I sell the car?

Sometimes. XPEL clear films and STEK transfer for the remaining term with paperwork; 3M and XPEL COLOR do not.

Does ceramic coating my PPF void the warranty?

It can. XPEL excludes non-XPEL ceramic coatings and STEK excludes third-party coatings, so use the film brand's coating or ask first.

Does the PPF warranty pay for labor?

XPEL says it covers parts and labor on approved claims. STEK covers the film only and excludes removal and reinstallation.

What happens if I skip warranty registration?

With STEK the warranty is not active until you register and activate it within 30 days. 3M asks you to register online to validate coverage.
