Ceramic Coating Plastic Trim: Products, Faded Trim and 2026 Cost
Yes, you can ceramic coat plastic trim, and a dedicated trim coating such as Gtechniq C4 lasts up to 2 years on unpainted exterior plastic, against a few weeks for a typical dressing. A DIY bottle costs $34 to $55, and a shop typically charges roughly $75 to $250 to coat the trim as part of a paint coating package in 2026.
Trim coatings are a different product from paint coatings. They are thinner, they bond to porous plastic rather than clear coat, and some are formulated to darken and restore faded gray trim at the same time. This guide covers how they work, what they can and cannot bring back, the main products, and what it costs to have it done.
Why trim needs its own coating
Unpainted exterior plastic, the black textured trim on bumpers, mirror bases, window surrounds, cowls and wheel arches, fades because UV breaks down the plastic surface and the oils and pigments in it migrate out. The result is the chalky gray look on older cars. A paint coating is built to sit on smooth clear coat, and on porous textured plastic it can streak, haze or leave high spots that are hard to level.
Trim coatings are made for that surface. Gtechniq says C4 forms a chemical bond with the plastic and becomes a very thin, optically clear film, about 30 nanometers, that dries to a natural satin finish rather than a wet-look gloss. That is the main difference from a dressing: a dressing sits on top and washes away, while a trim coating bonds and wears slowly. What a trim coating can and cannot restore
A clear trim coating restores color by putting a sealed, saturated layer over the plastic, which is why faded gray trim turns dark again when it goes on. Gtechniq says C4 restores all but the most faded trim to an as-new condition, and it is also used on new trim to stop fading before it starts. That last use is the best value, since protecting healthy trim is easier than reviving dead trim.
Trim that has turned white, rough or cracked has lost material, not just color, and a thin clear coating will only partly hide it. Those parts need a dye-based restorer, a trim paint, or replacement. Textured trim that has been dressed with silicone for years also needs a thorough degrease first, or the coating will bond to the old dressing instead of the plastic and fail early.
| Trim condition | Best fix | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| New or near new | Trim coating to prevent fading | Stays dark 1 to 2 years per application |
| Light gray fade | Deep clean, then trim coating | Returns to near factory color |
| Heavy chalky fade | Degrease, dye-based restorer, then coat | Big improvement, may not match new |
| White, rough or cracked | Trim paint or replace the part | Coating alone will not fix it |
Trim coating products and prices
The products below are true coatings rather than dressings. Gtechniq publishes a durability figure for C4; the others are sold on similar claims but retailer listings often do not state one. Small bottles go further than they look: Gtechniq's example is that a Golf suits the 15 ml bottle while a Mini, with more trim, needs the 30 ml, though very dry, thirsty trim can use more.
| Product | Size | Retail price | Stated durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gtechniq C4 Permanent Trim Restorer | 15 ml | $33.95 | Up to 2 years |
| Gtechniq C4 Permanent Trim Restorer | 30 ml | $54.95 | Up to 2 years |
| GYEON Q2 Trim EVO | 30 ml | $53.95 | Not stated by retailer |
| CarPro CQuartz DLUX kit | 30 ml | $39.99 | Not stated by retailer |
| Shine Supply Beadlock Trim Ceramic kit | 50 ml | $84.95 | Not stated by retailer |
How a trim coating goes on
Prep decides how long it lasts. Gtechniq's instructions call for cleaning trim with a neat all-purpose cleaner and a medium-stiff brush, rinsing, and drying completely, with previously dressed trim thoroughly degreased. The coating goes on with an applicator pad in a thin layer and any excess is wiped off immediately, working above 5°C and out of direct sun.
After that it needs to stay dry. Gtechniq says to allow 12 hours before exposure to the elements and to avoid rain for at least 12 hours. Keep trim coatings off paint, glass and rubber seals; wipe any that lands there right away with a microfiber cloth. Many coatings, including C4, are one-coat products, and an opened bottle should be used within a few months.
- ◆Degrease trim fully, especially if it has been dressed before
- ◆Apply thin and wipe excess immediately
- ◆Keep dry for 12 hours
- ◆Mask paint edges on tight areas such as window surrounds
What shops charge to coat trim
Most studios coat trim as part of a paint coating package, since the car is already clean and decontaminated. XPEL, for example, markets its Fusion Plus line for plastic and trim as well as paint, saying it helps restore trim and protect it from UV fading. As an add-on, trim coating typically adds roughly $75 to $250 depending on how much trim the car has; trucks and SUVs with large black bumpers and arches sit at the top.
Booked on its own, with a wash, degrease and coating, expect roughly $150 to $400. A full paint coating on a sedan runs $500 to $800 for a 1-year tier, $900 to $1,300 for a 3 to 5 year tier and $1,400 to $2,000 for a 7 to 9 year tier, as covered in How Much Does Ceramic Coating Cost in 2026? Real Prices by Tier, so ask whether trim is included before comparing quotes. Wheels are the other common add-on; see Can You Ceramic Coat Wheels? Brake Dust, Heat and What It Costs. Frequently asked questions
Can you put ceramic coating on plastic trim?
Yes, but use a trim-specific coating. Paint coatings can streak and high-spot on textured plastic, while trim coatings like Gtechniq C4 are made to bond to it.
How long does a trim coating last?
Gtechniq rates C4 at up to 2 years. Dressings typically last weeks, which is the main reason to choose a coating.
Will ceramic coating fix faded trim?
It restores light to moderate fading by sealing and darkening the surface. Trim that is white, rough or cracked needs a dye, trim paint or replacement.
Can I put a trim coating over trim dressing?
No. Silicone dressings block the bond, so the coating fails early. Degrease the trim thoroughly first, and scrub textured areas with a brush until water no longer beads on bare plastic.
Is trim coating worth adding to a ceramic coating package?
Usually yes. At roughly $75 to $250 it costs little next to the paint coating, and it keeps the trim from fading while the paint stays protected, so the car ages evenly.
Does ceramic coating make trim shiny?
Most trim coatings dry to a satin, factory-like finish. Gtechniq describes C4's result as natural satin rather than gloss.
