# PPF Removal Cost in 2026: Shop Prices for Old, Yellowed Film

Professional PPF removal costs $200 to $500 for a full front on film that is still in good shape, and $400 to $1,000 for the same area when the film is old, yellowed or cracking. Removing film from an entire sedan runs $1,200 to $2,500, and $1,500 to $3,500 or more on large SUVs and exotics.

Film age matters more than anything else. Young film peels in one sheet in minutes per panel. Film that has baked in the sun for seven years or more breaks into small pieces and leaves adhesive behind, and every hour spent picking at it and dissolving glue shows up on the bill. This guide covers shop pricing; the DIY method is in /guides/how-to-remove-ppf.

## Key facts

- **$200 to $500** to remove fresh film from a full front; **$400 to $1,000** when the film is old or yellowed
- **$1,200 to $2,500** to strip a full-body sedan, more on SUVs and exotics
- **$100 to $600** extra for adhesive residue, depending on how much glue stays behind
- **$100 to $300** for a one-step polish after removal, $500 to $1,000+ for multi-stage correction
- **XPEL's 10-year warranties cover yellowing** and can pay for removal and reapplication on covered film

## PPF removal cost by coverage and film age

Shops price removal by time, and time depends on how the adhesive and top layer have aged. Film under about three years old usually releases cleanly at 15 to 30 minutes per panel. Between three and seven years, labor often doubles or triples and moderate residue is likely. Past seven years, or on old PVC-based film, it can take one to two hours per panel, and the job starts to look like restoration rather than removal.

The table below uses typical 2026 shop pricing. Market matters too: hourly rates run about $50 to $80 in lower-cost areas, $80 to $115 in mid-cost markets like Texas and the Midwest, and $125 to $150 or more in coastal metros.

_Professional PPF removal cost by area and film condition, 2026_

| Area | Fresh film (under 3 years) | Old, yellowed or cracked film |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single panel (hood or roof) | $100 to $200 | $150 to $300 |
| Partial front (bumper, partial hood, mirrors) | $150 to $350 | $300 to $600 |
| Full front (bumper, hood, fenders, mirrors) | $200 to $500 | $400 to $1,000 |
| Full body, sedan | $1,200 to $1,800 | $1,800 to $2,500 |
| Full body, large SUV or exotic | $1,500 to $2,500 | $2,500 to $3,500+ |

> Age of the film, not size of the car, is what doubles a removal quote.

## Adhesive residue: the hidden part of the bill

When film comes off in one sheet, the adhesive usually comes with it. When aged film snaps into strips, the glue stays on the paint and has to be softened with a dedicated remover and wiped off by hand, without scraping. Shops commonly treat light residue as part of the base price, then add $100 to $300 for moderate residue that takes one to three extra hours, and $300 to $600 or more for heavy residue that has bonded to the clear coat.

Ask whether the quote is a flat price or an estimate with a residue allowance. A flat price is easier to budget; an estimate is fairer to you if the film turns out to release cleanly. Either way, ask the shop to look at a corner of the film in person before committing, since lifting an edge tells an installer most of what they need to know.

- Light residue: usually included
- Moderate residue: $100 to $300, 1 to 3 extra hours
- Heavy residue bonded to clear coat: $300 to $600+

## Old, yellowed film and what the warranty may cover

Yellowing is mostly a problem of older film generations and budget film; modern TPU films from major brands resist it far better, as covered in /guides/does-ppf-yellow. If your film is yellowing inside its warranty term, check the warranty before paying for removal. XPEL's PPF warranties cover yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating for 10 years on lines such as ULTIMATE PLUS and STEALTH, and for covered defects XPEL says it will replace the film and cover parts and labor through an authorized installer of its choosing, with the repair pre-approved.

Those warranties do not cover paint damage under the film, stains, or film damaged by collisions and harsh chemicals. Unbranded film often has no meaningful warranty at all, which is one reason budget film can cost an extra $600 to $1,000 in removal labor years later.

## Paint correction after removal

Paint that was protected by film usually looks as good as the day it was covered. The edges are the exception: a faint line where film met exposed paint, slightly different gloss between protected and unprotected areas, or light marring from residue removal. A one-step polish at $100 to $300 fixes most of this. Severe ghosting or etched edges need multi-stage correction at $500 to $1,000 or more, and correction pricing in general is in /guides/how-much-is-paint-correction.

If new film is going on right away, book removal, correction and installation together. The shop does decontamination once instead of twice, and many installers fold removal into the price of a new full-front package. New PPF pricing is in /guides/ppf-cost.

## When removal costs more than it should

Three situations push removal past the ranges above. Film on panels that have been repainted, since the adhesive can lift fresh or poorly bonded paint. Film on collision-repaired panels, where removal labor can pass $1,000. And film that someone has already tried to remove at home, leaving a patchwork of torn edges and glue. If the paint itself fails during removal, a bumper respray runs about $800 to $2,500.

Photograph every panel before the job starts, note any existing chips or lifting, and ask the shop how it handles paint that lifts with the film. A clear answer up front is worth more than a low quote. The instant quote on Coateau lists local PPF studios with their public Google ratings and manufacturer certifications.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: How much does it cost to remove a clear bra?**
A: About $200 to $500 for a full front on film in good condition and $400 to $1,000 when the film is old or yellowed. A full-body removal on a sedan runs $1,200 to $2,500.

**Q: Why is removing old PPF so expensive?**
A: Old film becomes brittle and breaks into small pieces, and its adhesive stays on the paint. Shops bill by the hour, and aged film can take one to two hours per panel.

**Q: Will the PPF warranty pay for removal?**
A: Sometimes. XPEL's 10-year warranties cover yellowing and cracking and can cover labor to replace defective film, but they exclude paint damage, stains and collision damage.

**Q: Do I need paint correction after PPF removal?**
A: Often a light one-step polish at $100 to $300 is enough to blend edge lines. Multi-stage correction is only needed for heavy ghosting or etching.
