# How to Clean Car Windows Streak-Free, Inside and Out

To clean car windows without streaks, use an ammonia-free automotive glass cleaner sprayed onto a microfiber towel rather than the glass, wipe in overlapping passes, then buff dry immediately with a second clean, dry glass towel. Streaks almost always come from too much product, a dirty or lint-shedding towel, or glass that is hot from the sun.

Inside glass is harder than outside glass because of a greasy film that builds up from the cabin itself. It needs more passes and a cleaner that cuts oil, and if the windows are tinted, the cleaner has to be safe on the film.

## Key facts

- **Two towels**: one to clean, one dry towel to buff
- **Spray the towel, not the glass**, especially inside, so cleaner stays off the dash and screens
- **Crosshatch**: side to side on one pass, top to bottom on the next, so streaks show up
- **Interior haze is mostly off-gassed residue** from the dash and trim, not outside dirt
- **On tinted glass, use a non-ammonia cleaner** and wait out the installer's cure time before cleaning

## Tools and conditions that prevent streaks

Use a dedicated automotive glass cleaner that is ammonia-free, two or three clean microfiber glass towels (waffle weave or a tight, low-pile weave), and a no-soak applicator or reach tool for the base of the windshield. The Rag Company's guide advises against cotton and paper towels, which leave lint and specks.

Clean glass in the shade when it is cool. Cleaner evaporates almost instantly on hot glass and leaves streaks before you can buff it. Wash glass towels separately from wax and polish towels, without fabric softener, since residue from either transfers straight onto the glass as smears.

_What causes streaks and how to fix it_

| Cause | What you see | Fix |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Too much cleaner | Wet trails and smears | Use a few sprays on the towel per window |
| Dirty or softened towel | Haze that moves around | Fresh towel, washed without softener |
| Hot glass or direct sun | Streaks that appear as it dries | Move to shade, let glass cool |
| Cotton or paper towels | Lint and specks | Microfiber glass towels only |
| Interior film not fully removed | Rainbow haze in low sun | Second pass, crosshatch, buff dry |

## Exterior glass, step by step

If the windshield still feels rough or shows water spots after washing, the glass needs decontamination with clay or a glass polish rather than more cleaner. For water beading on the windshield, see /guides/ceramic-coating-for-glass.

- Wash the car first so loose grit is gone from the glass.
- Lift the wipers and clean the windshield in two halves, reaching across from each side.
- Spray cleaner onto a towel, wipe side to side, then top to bottom.
- Buff dry right away with the second towel.
- Roll each side window down a few inches and clean the top edge that hides in the seal.
- Wipe the wiper blades with a damp towel so they do not drag dirt back across clean glass.

## Interior glass and the haze problem

The greasy film on the inside of the windshield comes mostly from the cabin. The Rag Company describes it as a thin film of off-gassed plasticizers from the dash and vinyl trim, which heat speeds up. Jalopnik's explainer adds other sources: smoking or vaping residue, interior detailing products, air fresheners and a dirty cabin air filter. It also flags one that matters for safety: a sticky film that smells sweet, like antifreeze, can mean a heater core coolant leak, which needs a mechanic rather than a cleaner.

The Rag Company's method works well. Roll the front windows down about an inch so the towel can wrap the top edge. Spray cleaner onto the applicator, not the glass, to keep overspray off the dash. Work the glass in overlapping passes, paying attention to the lower corners near the dash and the top edge by the headliner. Buff dry immediately with a clean glass towel, then check the glass at a low angle against sunlight or a flashlight and re-buff any trails.

Heavy film usually takes two rounds. Clean the inside glass last in any detail, after vacuuming and wiping the dash, so dust and dressing overspray do not land on it afterward. Go light on glossy dash dressings, which add to the film.

> Sticky, sweet-smelling haze is a coolant warning, not a cleaning problem.

## Tinted windows: what to avoid

Aftermarket tint is a film on the inside surface of the glass, so every interior window cleaning touches it. XPEL's care instructions for its PRIME automotive window film call for a microfiber towel slightly dampened with water, mild non-ammonia glass cleaners if needed, and no abrasive materials such as scouring pads. The Rag Company also warns that ammonia breaks down window tint film over time, which is why household glass cleaners with ammonia are out.

Do not clean new tint until it has cured. XPEL says to wait about 1 to 5 days, depending on climate, before rolling down or cleaning freshly tinted windows, and notes that haze or small moisture pockets can appear for up to ten days after installation. That is normal drying, not dirt, so leave it alone. The roll-down timing is covered in /guides/can-you-roll-down-windows-after-tint.

Be gentle at the edges, where a rough towel can catch and lift film, and on the rear window, where scraping can damage the defroster lines. For which tint-safe cleaners to buy, see /compare/best-glass-cleaner-for-tinted-windows rather than a list here.

## How often to clean the glass

Exterior glass gets cleaned whenever you wash the car, since dirt, bugs and road film build up fastest on the windshield. Interior glass usually needs attention every few weeks, more often in hot weather, when heat speeds up off-gassing, and in cars where someone smokes or vapes. Haze is easiest to spot when driving into low sun, so if you notice glare or a rainbow sheen at sunset, the inside glass is due.

Replacing a dirty cabin air filter, which Jalopnik lists among the sources of haze, can slow the rate at which film builds up. Keeping glossy dash dressings to a minimum helps too.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Why are my car windows still streaky after cleaning?**
A: Usually too much cleaner, a dirty towel or hot glass. Use less product, a fresh microfiber for buffing, and clean in the shade.

**Q: What causes the film on the inside of my windshield?**
A: Mostly off-gassing from interior plastics and vinyl, plus smoke, vaping and detailing product residue. A sticky, sweet-smelling film can mean a heater core coolant leak.

**Q: Can I use Windex on tinted car windows?**
A: Not the ammonia formulas. Tint makers such as XPEL recommend non-ammonia cleaners, since ammonia can break down window film over time.

**Q: Should I clean the inside or outside glass first?**
A: Do the outside after washing the car and the inside last, after vacuuming and wiping the dash, so nothing lands on clean interior glass.
