# Colored PPF: Color-Change Paint Protection Film, Cost and Durability

Colored PPF is paint protection film with pigment built into the urethane, so it changes the car's color the way a vinyl wrap does while also absorbing rock chips and self-healing light scratches like clear PPF. A full-body install on a standard sedan runs about $5,500 to $8,000 and up in 2026, well above a premium vinyl color change, and the major lines from XPEL and STEK carry 10-year warranties.

It is the most expensive way to change a car's color, and the color menu is smaller than vinyl's. What you get for the money is a film about twice as thick as vinyl that lasts years longer and actually protects the paint underneath. Whether that trade is worth it comes down to how long you plan to keep the color and the car.

## Key facts

- **Full-body colored PPF runs $5,500 to $8,000 and up on a sedan** in 2026; SUVs run about 1.2 times higher and large trucks about 1.4 times.
- **XPEL COLOR comes in 16 colors at 8 mil** and carries a 10-year warranty against yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating.
- **STEK's DYNOprism-fire carries 10 years**, 12 with STEK Final Coat on top.
- **Vinyl wrap film is about 3 to 4 mil**; colored PPF is about 8 mil and self-heals.
- **Ceramic Pro's colored PPF line is SHIFT**, a pigment-embedded TPU film.

## What colored PPF is and how it differs from vinyl

Clear PPF is a thermoplastic polyurethane film with a self-healing top coat. Colored PPF uses the same base and adds pigment, metallic flake or a tinted layer, so the finished panel shows the film's color instead of the paint's. STEK describes its DYNOprism-fire color film as self-healing, hydrophobic and stain resistant, the same behavior owners expect from clear film.

Vinyl wrap is a different material: cast PVC film around 3 to 4 mil thick, designed for color and conformability rather than impact absorption. It does not self-heal, and a stone at highway speed goes through it into the paint. Colored PPF at about 8 mil absorbs most of those impacts. For the broader film-versus-film decision, including clear PPF against vinyl, see /guides/ppf-vs-vinyl-wrap; this guide sticks to the color-change use case.

## The main colored PPF lines in 2026

Only a handful of PPF brands make true color film, and the lines are still growing. These are the ones most US installers stock or can order.

- XPEL COLOR: 16 colors in gloss, satin and bold finishes, 8 mil thick. XPEL's warranty covers yellowing, cracking, blistering and delaminating for 10 years, though labor coverage is conditional and must be pre-approved by XPEL, and unlike its clear Ultimate Plus film the COLOR warranty is non-transferable.
- STEK color and fashion films: solid colors, matte versions and the DYNOprism metal flake family. DYNOprism-fire, a smoked color-shift film, is 8 mil; STEK warrants it for 10 years against delamination, yellowing, bubbling and cracking, 12 with STEK Final Coat on top.
- Ceramic Pro SHIFT: Ceramic Pro's colored PPF, described as pigment-embedded TPU. Its KAVACA films are the brand's clear and matte line, so ask for SHIFT by name if you want a color.
- Others: SunTek, 3M and UPPF sell color or tinted films through select installers, often as special orders with their own warranty terms.

> Ask to see a physical sample on a panel in daylight. XPEL itself says its online colors are for reference only.

## What colored PPF costs

Colored PPF costs more than clear PPF for three reasons: the film itself costs more per foot, installers usually wrap more edges and seams to hide the original paint color, and fewer shops are trained to install it. Compared with the $5,000 to $8,000 catalog band for clear full-body PPF, colored film sits at the top of that range or a little above it, and well above a professional vinyl wrap at $3,500 to $6,000. UPPF's published averages put a full vehicle at $5,500 to $8,000 and up, front-end coverage at $1,800 to $3,500, and accent pieces such as the roof, mirrors or spoiler at $600 to $1,500.

For a standard sedan, plan on $5,500 to $8,000 and up for full body. A mid-size SUV runs about 1.2 times that and a large SUV or truck about 1.4 times. Door jambs are usually extra, since covering them takes hours of disassembly, and skipping them means the old color shows when the doors open. Matte and satin colored films sit at the top of the range. If you only want a contrasting roof, hood or mirrors, partial colored PPF is a far smaller bill and still protects those panels.

## How long it lasts and what can go wrong

UPPF rates its colored film at up to 10 years; a quality vinyl wrap typically lasts 3 to 7 years. XPEL backs COLOR for 10 years, and STEK backs DYNOprism-fire for 10, or 12 with Final Coat. The usual exclusions apply: XPEL's COLOR warranty excludes damage from automatic car washes, improper wash tools, mineral water spots, harsh chemicals and non-XPEL ceramic coatings. XPEL also asks owners to wait 72 hours before the first wash on COLOR film, longer than the 48 hours for its clear films.

Color matching is the risk that clear film does not have. Pigment can vary slightly between production runs, and a replacement panel from a different lot can look a shade off next to five-year-old film, especially with metallic and color-shift finishes. STEK's warranty terms require the same lot number across the whole vehicle and ask both STEK and the customer to keep a roll from the original lot for at least two years for repairs. Ask any installer how they handle lot records before you commit.

Removal is the other consideration. Like clear PPF, colored film comes off cleanly from healthy factory paint, so the original color is still there when you sell. That is a real advantage over repainting.

## Who colored PPF makes sense for

Colored PPF makes the most sense for an owner who wants a new color and plans to keep the car five years or more, especially on a new or high-value car where rock chips would otherwise go straight into factory paint. In that case you are buying a color change and full-body protection in one job, and the comparison is not vinyl at $3,500 to $6,000 but vinyl plus clear PPF, which can cost more than colored film alone.

It makes less sense if you like to change colors every few years, want an unusual finish such as chrome, or are leasing a car you will return soon. Vinyl is cheaper, offers far more colors, and the removal cost at the end is lower. For a satin look without changing color, matte clear PPF at /guides/matte-ppf is the simpler choice. The instant quote on Coateau lists local PPF studios with public Google ratings and manufacturer certifications, which helps narrow down who is certified for color film.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Is colored PPF better than a vinyl wrap?**
A: It protects better and lasts longer, since it is about twice as thick and self-heals. Vinyl is cheaper, comes in far more colors and finishes, and is the better pick for short-term color changes.

**Q: How much does colored PPF cost?**
A: About $5,500 to $8,000 and up for full body on a standard sedan in 2026, more for SUVs and trucks. Partial jobs such as a roof or mirrors run $600 to $1,500.

**Q: Does colored PPF come off without damaging paint?**
A: On healthy factory paint, yes, like clear PPF. Repainted or damaged paint can lift during removal, which warranties do not cover.

**Q: Can you ceramic coat colored PPF?**
A: Yes, but check the warranty first. XPEL excludes damage from non-XPEL ceramic coatings, and STEK extends DYNOprism-fire to 12 years only with its own Final Coat.

**Q: Is the XPEL COLOR warranty transferable?**
A: No. XPEL's published terms say the COLOR PPF warranty is non-transferable, unlike its clear Ultimate Plus warranty.
