# The protection cost report

Catalog ranges by service and tier, the vehicle-size and finish multipliers, deposits, and exactly how every figure is derived, cross-referenced to /data/price-index.

_Audience: Anyone budgeting for ceramic coating, PPF, window tint, vinyl wrap or detailing across one or more vehicles.. Last verified 2026-10-01._

## What this document answers

- What is the catalog price range for every service and tier Coateau carries?
- How much more does an SUV, a large SUV or truck, or an exotic finish cost versus a sedan?
- How is the deposit calculated?
- What specifically moves a quote above or below the catalog range?
- Where do these numbers come from, and how do I know they are not stale?

## How to use this document

Start with the catalog table for your service, then check the multiplier table for your vehicle size and finish. The full price index below combines both into one number you can sanity-check a real quote against before you call a studio.

## 1. Catalog ranges by service and tier

Every service in the Coateau catalog is priced by coverage tier, not by parts and labor hours the way a repair order would be. The table below is the full catalog: the price band for a sedan-size vehicle at every tier Coateau carries, and the typical deposit percentage for that service category.

_Every row read directly from data/services.ts; nothing here is typed by hand per page._

| Service | Tier | Catalog low | Catalog high | Typical deposit |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Ceramic Coating | Silver (1 yr) | $500 | $800 | 50% |
| Ceramic Coating | Gold (3 yr) | $900 | $1,300 | 50% |
| Ceramic Coating | Diamond (5 yr+) | $1,400 | $2,000 | 50% |
| Paint Protection Film | Partial Front | $900 | $1,500 | 50% |
| Paint Protection Film | Full Front | $1,800 | $3,000 | 50% |
| Paint Protection Film | Track Pack | $2,400 | $3,600 | 50% |
| Paint Protection Film | Full Body | $5,000 | $8,000 | 50% |
| Window Tint | Carbon Film | $250 | $400 | 30% |
| Window Tint | Ceramic Film | $450 | $700 | 30% |
| Window Tint | Ceramic Windshield | $300 | $500 | 30% |
| Vinyl Wrap | Partial / Accent | $800 | $1,800 | 50% |
| Vinyl Wrap | Full Color Change | $3,500 | $6,000 | 50% |
| Detailing | Interior Detail | $150 | $300 | 25% |
| Detailing | Exterior Detail | $150 | $300 | 25% |
| Detailing | Full Detail | $300 | $550 | 25% |
| Detailing | Paint Correction | $500 | $1,200 | 40% |

## 2. Vehicle size and finish multipliers

The catalog base price assumes a sedan-size vehicle in good condition. Three multipliers move a quote away from that baseline, applied by lib/estimate.ts, the same function behind every live Coateau estimate and the /data/price-index dataset.

| Factor | Multiplier | Applies to |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Car / Sedan | x1 | Coupe, sedan, small hatch |
| SUV / Truck | x1.2 | Crossover, mid SUV, pickup |
| XL / Van | x1.4 | Full-size SUV, van, 3-row |
| Exotic finish | x1.25 | Supercars and exotic finishes; stacks on top of the vehicle-size multiplier |
| Needs paint correction | x1.12 | Paint in condition that requires correction before coating or film, per lib/estimate.ts |

## 3. Full price index by vehicle class

Combining the catalog bands with the size and exotic multipliers produces one price range per service, tier and vehicle class. This is the complete table, not a sample; it is the same data published machine-readable at /data/price-index.json.

_The exact table published at /data/price-index, reproduced here so the money document and the dataset never disagree._

## 4. Deposits

The deposit shown in the full index above is 20 percent of the sedan-size low estimate, rounded to the nearest $5, with a $50 floor. This single rule, not a per-service flat fee, is what both lib/pricing.ts's quote() and lib/estimate.ts's estimateRange() compute, so the deposit a customer sees at checkout always matches the deposit in this report.

## 5. What moves a quote up or down

A vehicle size step up (sedan to SUV, or SUV to a large SUV or truck) moves the price before anything about the paint is considered. An exotic finish adds its own 1.25x on top of the sedan baseline. Paint that needs correction before coating or film adds another 1.12x for the extra prep time; as a worked example, the silver (1 yr) ceramic coating tier on an SUV-size vehicle needing correction prices at $670–$1,075 with a $135 deposit, versus the plain SUV range shown in the full index above.

None of these multipliers are studio-specific discretion; they are the same fixed factors applied everywhere on the site. A studio's final number can still differ from the catalog range because studios calibrate their own base pricing in their dashboard; the catalog is a national starting point, not a price-fixing agreement.

## 6. How these figures are derived

Every number in this report is computed, not entered by hand on this page. The catalog bands live in data/services.ts and were last checked against installer pricing on 2026-10-01. The multiplier and deposit math live in lib/pricing.ts and lib/estimate.ts, the same two functions that power the live quote tool at /quote and the dataset at /data/price-index. If any of those three change, this report changes with them automatically; there is nothing here to go stale independently.

## What this document does not cover

- Any specific studio's actual price; the catalog is a national starting calibration each studio sets independently in their own dashboard.
- Labor rates, material costs, or margin for any individual business.
- Financing terms or payment plans.
- Taxes, which vary by jurisdiction and are not included in any range shown.

## Frequently asked questions

**Q: Why is there a range instead of one price?**
A: Appearance work genuinely varies by paint condition, film or coating brand chosen, and the individual studio's own pricing. A single number would be more precise-looking but less honest than a range grounded in the actual catalog spread.

**Q: What is the deposit for?**
A: The deposit reserves the appointment slot with the studio you choose. It is 20 percent of the low end of the sedan-size estimate, with a $50 floor, computed the same way everywhere on the site.

**Q: Does the exotic multiplier stack with the SUV or truck multiplier?**
A: No. As implemented in lib/estimate.ts, the exotic multiplier (1.25x) and the vehicle-size multiplier are both applied to the sedan catalog baseline; the full index table shows the exotic column computed against the sedan baseline specifically, not stacked on top of the SUV or truck figures.
